University of California, Lindcove Research & Extension Center
50th Anniversary and Citrus Fruit Display and Tasting Event
December 12, 2009
This year is the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Lindcove Research and Extension Center, first known as Lindcove Field Station. Beginning with only 90 acres of bare land, it has grown to 175 acres and supports more than 25 research projects annually. The facilities include three greenhouses for tree production, 125 acres of citrus planted for research purposes, a pack line and a fruit quality laboratory for evaluating external and internal quality of fruit, two screen houses for the Citrus Clonal Protection Program to provide disease-free bud wood to the nursery industry, a recently constructed laboratory for entomology and horticulture studies, and a conference center for teaching. The success of this Center is due to an extraordinary collaboration between the University of California and the citrus industry, especially the Citrus Research Board who has provided funding for building projects and each year supports much of the research conducted at LREC. This collaboration has produced state-of-the art facilities and supported innovative research programs that have launched new citrus varieties.
The University of California, Lindcove Research and Extension Center is hosting their annual Citrus Fruit Display in December. During the Citrus Fruit Display day, you can see and taste more than 100 citrus varieties that are grown at Lindcove.
The general public is invited to visit on Saturday, December 12th, for Citrus Fruit Display and Tasting from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Master Gardeners and UC Extension personnel will be happy to answer questions from home gardeners and citrus connoisseurs. This is an excellent opportunity to taste, evaluate, and learn the names of your favorite citrus varieties.
